Richmond RCMP have launched an app.

The Richmond RCMP and the city have launched a community safety app that can be downloaded to smart phones to look at crime maps, read press releases and, in some cases, report a crime.

“We are always looking for new and creative ways to engage with the residents of Richmond, and to keep them updated and informed in respect to police and public safety matters,” said Superintendent Will Ng, Officer in Charge of Richmond RCMP.

It also contains information about personal safety, crime prevention, emergency alerts/broadcasts, an events calendar and details on programs and services offered by Richmond RCMP.

When the app is downloaded, the user is asked to allow the collection of anonymized data – “deemed to be private” under the B.C. Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The anonymized information is stored in the U.S. and could be shared with third parties, for example, Apple and Google.

The Community Safety app, which can be downloaded in Apple and Android app stores - search for “Richmond RCMP” - is a joint initiative between the City of Richmond and Richmond RCMP.
