Richmond RCMP are warning about fake jewelry scammers.

Richmond RCMP recently received three fake jewelry-related reports in one day.

They have issued a public warning telling people not to let strangers handle any personal items and to be wary of anyone selling jewelry on the street.

Two techniques have been used recently, RCMP say.

First, a suspect approaches unsuspecting people on the street offering to sell fake jewelry.

Secondly, a suspect handles someone’s personal jewelry and then switches it out with a less valuable piece when they hand it back.

Richmond RCMP Cpl. Kenneth Lau warns people not to let strangers handle their personal items and to be “suspicious” of anyone on the street offering to sell low-priced jewelry.

“Regardless of their explanation, do not offer to buy from these people,” Lau said. “Walk away and report this incident to your local police.”

Anyone with information regarding this criminal activity trend is asked to contact their police of jurisdiction.

If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit them online.
