Richmond RCMP is working with Canadian National Railway Police to increase safety checks at railway crossings in the city this week.
This coincides with National Rail Safety Week, observed from Sept. 23 to 29, to raise awareness about railway crossing area safety and preventing incidents involving trains.
Officers on the road will focus on railway crossing laws and promoting safety messages to road users.
"Our goal is to remind drivers and pedestrians of the risks associated with railway crossings and ensure they remain safe," said Sgt. Eric Baskette, a spokesperson with the Richmond RCMP's road safety unit.
Key safety tips for drivers at railway crossings include:
- Avoid distractions: Stay focused on the road and leave your phone alone while driving;
- Be prepared to stop: Always be alert at railway crossings and respect all signals, including gates and lights.
- Never attempt to drive under or around a closing or closed gate;
- Never stop on the tracks.
