Richmond RCMP issue 18 tickets in Russ Baker Way HOV lane sting

The two-hour operation took place on Sept. 18 along Russ Baker Way with policing giving out $109 fines

Richmond RCMP issued18 tickets during a two-hour HOV lane operation along Russ Baker Way, with an associated fine of $109.

This operation took place on Sept. 18 in an area where the HOV lane requires three persons, with no EV decal exception.

On Oct. 3, Richmond RCMP posted the following on X (formerly Twitter):

“You called, we answered. 18 charges laid during a 2-hour HOV lane operation. This spot on Russ Baker Way requires 3 persons, no EV decal exception. Violators were pulled over and served their charges on the shoulder so that the HOV was free for proper users.”

However, the post was deleted from social media.

On Friday, Richmond RCMP said the post included an image of a damaged HOV sign from a previous date, not connected to the Sept. 18 operation.

The image showed an HOV sign along Russ Baker Way suggesting the lane required only two occupants, which is not correct, said the RCMP.

“This photo was taken by our Road Safety Unit on June 10, 2024 and was reported to the Vancouver Airport Authority for repairs. Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit did not conduct any HOV enforcement at this location during the period the sign was defaced,” they added.

Richmond RCMP media relations officer Adriana O’Malley said, as a matter of practice, officers from the Road Safety Unit will check signs relating to enforcement operations are clear and unobstructed before and after an operation is concluded.

“As soon as we became aware of the discrepancy, we removed the post to prevent any confusion. We apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused,” she added.
