Police and ICBC will be at McDonald Beach on Saturday to raise awareness about impaired driving and boating.

Richmond RCMP say this joint initiative is to "increase awareness, prevention and enforcement associated to boating safety and impaired driving."

According to RCMP, on average 17 people are killed and 600 injured every year in driving-related crashes in the Lower Mainland.

The joint operation will include Richmond RCMP officers from the Vancouver International Airport, the Community Engagement Team, the Road Safety Unit and the Richmond RCMP boat, the Fraser Guardian.

"Keeping our waterways safe through enforcement is an extremely important part of our job," said Staff Sgt.-Maj. Ross Lundie, NCO-in-Charge of the Fraser Guardian.

"In addition to conducting enforcement, we recognize the importance of education as it can effect long-term change in behaviours which ultimately can save lives."
