Police are urging Richmondites to be vigilant following a "troubling rise" in purse snatching incidents.
According to Richmond RCMP, police received six reports of alleged robberies involving purse snatchings between Feb. 22 and March 23, with all victims being women.
Four of the incidents happened in central Richmond and two in Steveston and none of the victims were physically injured.
In five of the incidents, the suspect is described as a male between 5 feet three inches and five feet six inches, who was dressed in dark clothing and wore a mask.
"There is insufficient evidence at this time to determine if these alleged crimes were committed by the same person," clarified Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang.
The investigations are active and ongoing and police are hoping other victims, if any, will come forward.
"We urge every resident to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police of jurisdiction," says Insp. Michael Cohee, officer-in-charge of Richmond RCMP's investigative services and community engagement.
"Awareness and prompt reporting are crucial in helping us address the issue effectively."
Tips to remain safe
Richmond RCMP has offered the following safety tips for community members:
- Keep your head up, stay alert, and be aware of your surroundings;
- Take note of the people, businesses, and sources of assistance in the area;
- If a criminal is after your purse or other material items, throw the item one way while you run the other way;
- Details are critical. Take note of what the suspect(s) look like and their direction of travel. Physical descriptions such as height or weight, clothing, and visible markings like scars, tattoos, or piercings can help the police in later identifying the suspect. If a vehicle is involved, try to take notes describing the suspicious vehicle, license plate, and the stranger’s description;
- Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so.
