A shred-a-thon is being held in Richmond next week to raise money to help a local exotic bird sanctuary.

The event - on Saturday, June 4, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5188 Westminster Highway – will raise money for the Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, which, in 2016, saved almost 600 birds from shocking conditions at the World Parrot Refuge near Parksville on Vancouver Island.

Greyhaven, which has been around since 1998, is a non-profit society whose purpose is to provide rescue and protection for parrots, through temporary shelter, with the goal of placing each bird in a new loving home.

Charity stepped in to save hundreds of birds

It used to rescue and rehome about 200 birds a year until it stepped in to save the hundreds of birds from the refuge in Coombs, near Parksville.

Greyhaven said this week that some of those rescued parrots are still waiting for their own homes, “and the love of a special person.”

Greyhaven's two shelters house over 100 parrots at any given time.
