Eight Richmond figure skaters are preparing to compete in this year’s Canadian championships next week.

Richmond Connaught Skating Club will see its athletes, including last year’s Canadian champion Wesley Chiu, partake in the 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships from Jan. 15 to 21 in Laval, Que.

Skaters David “Davey” Howes and Amy Shao Ning Yang are both looking forward to the championships after medalling at the Skate Canada Challenge last month.

Howes won bronze in the junior men's category and Yang won gold in the senior ladies category at the competition.

The skaters told the Richmond News they are excited to once again be able to compete in the championships as it will be the last big competition of the season.

"I think we both feel pretty relaxed. We've been focusing on consistency in our training for the last month and a half," said Yang.

Howes added he is proud to show the results of his training.

"Ideally, I want to have a podium finish, but the main goal is to be able to put out two performances that I'm proud of," he said.

"I'm definitely looking forward to performing for one of the bigger audiences in Canada, and to show progressive improvement in my skating."

Meanwhile, Yang is excited to make it to nationals and for her first visit to Quebec.

"I've never been to Quebec so it's a new province for me to visit," she said.

"Placement-wise, I have an idea, but it's more about putting on my best performance. I've been working on some movements that I don't usually show... and I hope to showcase that in Quebec."
