Eric Li and his mother May Tsoi are the honourees for this year’s Richmond Walk for Alzheimers.

A mother and son duo will be honoured at the annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Richmond next month.

Eric Li and his mother May Tsoi are the honorees at the fundraising event held at Hugh McRoberts secondary on Sunday, May 28.

Li had a life-changing accident that left him with hemorrhaging in his left frontal lobe and a multi-level spinal injury.

The accident also provided him insight into the challenges his mother faces living with frontotemporal dementia.

“The brain injury has allowed me to get a glimpse into my mom’s world, and that allowed me to connect with her and learn about myself,” said Li. “Through her needs, I learned about my own needs.”

He connected with the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to gain a better understanding of dementia and learn how to take care of his mother.

“That first call with the Alzheimer Society was the first step in bringing light into the darkness,” he said.

“Through trial and error with my mom, I find success every day as long as I don’t give up.”

Li has since established a scholarship in his mother’s name, The Li Family: May Mei-Chu Tsoi Resilience Award.

Anyone living with dementia or know of someone else who is an opportunity for people to remember or honour those in our lives who have been touched by dementia while fundraising to support those living with the disease today.

The Richmond Walk is one of 22 walks across municipalities in B.C with registration starting at 9 a.m. followed by the 3-kilometre walk at 10 a.m.

Door prizes and performances will take place after the walk.
