Richmond Secondary School student Eric Li is moving on to the next phase of this year’s International Geography Olympiad.
Li, who is competing in the level three category of the Canadian Geographic Challenge, advanced to the fieldwork or project level after scoring top 10 in the written exam.
The Canadian Geographic Challenge, in the level three category, challenges Canadian students, between the ages 16 and 19, on their geography knowledge in three tests: multimedia, written and fieldwork.
“The electronic written exam was done on the school computer and it went very well,” said Li. He extended his thanks to Richmond Secondary’s librarian Ms. Chung who was the invigilator for his exam as well as Ms. Rakshin Kandola for her support in helping run the school's environmental science club.
“I’m not anxious at all for the fieldwork part (second phase) of the exam, and I feel like I’m super prepared because I learned a lot during the fieldwork phase last year.”
While preparing for his next challenge in the competition, Li told the Richmond News that he will be training and mentoring students taking the level two category of the Canadian Geographic Challenge.
The level two, he said, is for students in Grade 7 to 10 who will take part in a multiple choice and written exam.
“I hope these students can learn more about geography. I feel like the main purpose of these geography competitions is to not only get students excited about geography, but environmentalism,” said Li.
“This is a step in guiding others to make a difference in the world.”
