Controversy abounds in the local taxi industry.

Richmond Taxi will expand its vehicle fleet by 10 conventional taxis and five wheelchair accessible taxis bringing its fleet total to 77 total vehicles.

The expansion was approved by the Passenger Transportation Board, which regulates the taxi industry.

Garden City Cabs submitted a letter to the board stating the city doesn't need more wheelchair accessible taxis.

Furthermore, GCL stated that Richmond Taxi needed to prove it was making full use of its existing fleet.

Meanwhile Kimber Cabs noted it has a pending application, which it believes should also be approved because of growing demand.

The board found that taxi demand at Vancouver International Airport has increased in the last five years.

It believed Richmond Taxi was making full use of its existing fleet and more vehicles were needed.
