Richmondites woke up to a light blanket of snow Thursday morning.
The snow follows several days of frigid temperatures -- Richmond recorded a new record low temperature Wednesday (Feb. 23), when, at around 6 a.m. at Vancouver International Airport, the mercury dipped to -6C.
That's two degrees colder than Feb. 23, 1993, according to https://vancouver.weatherstats.ca/.
A special weather statement from Environment Canada warns the icy temperatures are expected to stick around until Friday morning (Feb. 25).
The weather agency said an Arctic air mass is in place over the B.C. coast, and temperatures Thursday morning will hit -5C or colder.
However, those temperatures combined with light easterly outflow winds mean windchill values will be near -10C.
While temperatures will rise Wednesday afternoon to 5C, they will drop again to -5C again Friday morning.
People should dress warmly in layers when they are outside, and make sure shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals, according to Environment Canada.
The mercury will start to gradually rise this weekend.
