Richmondites are invited to join a local charity to spread mental health awareness, one step at a time.

Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada (CMWAC), a Richmond non-profit charitable organization, will host a mental health walk on July 16 at the South Arm Park on Williams Rd.

“The goal of the event is to get people outside of their homes, get people to talk about mental health issues without feeling embarrased or ashamed by it,” said Ahlay Chin, the walking event organizer and founder of CMWAC.

As an avid walker, Chin said she feels walking together as a group will not only help people keep fit but also make them feel supported.

“Walking can kill sadness. Many people who are struggling with mental health issues will feel they aren’t alone anymore after hanging out with others. Hopefully, the walking event will be transformed into a conversation hub to facilitate conversations and support each other,” said Chin.

Anyone interested can just show up on July 16 at 10 a.m. at 9020 Williams Rd.

Meanwhile, refreshments will also be provided on-site following the long walk.

Chin is also encouraging people to follow her on Instagram by using the hashtag #breakthestigma.
