Work is underway on a three-phased multi-use pathway on Steveston Highway. But it appears a fourth phase is being planned.
Phase four would extend the multi-use pathway, for cyclists and pedestrians, from Shell Road to No. 5 Road possibly in 2026.
This new section is currently in the “early design stage,” according to Richmond city spokesperson Clay Adams, and it will be impacted by the Steveston overpass expansion and the new tunnel that will replace the current George Massey Tunnel.
In a finance committee report, the City of Richmond noted about $420,000 was spent on consulting services for the “Steveston Multi-Use Pathway Phase 4.”
The contract, awarded to McElhanney Consulting Services, was for traffic studies and concept development as well as for detailed design and engineering services, Adams explained.
Funding for the actual construction of the multi-use pathway is expected to be part of the 2026 capital budget, contingent on approval by city council.
The three-phased multi-use pathway from No. 2 Road to Shell Road cost $17 million.
