The architect and the design/build company have been chosen for the second phase of the Richmond Hospital redevelopment project.
Graham Design Builders LP and HDR Architecture Associates will lead the construction of the new Yurkovich Family Pavilion at Richmond Hospital, announced Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) on Tuesday (Feb. 25).
The team will spend one year in an "alliance-development phase" to make sure "all parties are aligned and committed to working together effectively," according to a VCH media statement.
Once that is completed in 2026, construction of the nine-floor acute care tower is expected to start with a completion date in late 2029.
The four-phase redevelopment project is estimated to cost $1.96 billion, funded by the provincial government, Vancouver Coastal Health and the Richmond Hospital Foundation.
The hospital upgrade will include more beds, rooms and equipment.
This means adding 113 more hospital beds for a total of 359 acute care beds and three more operating rooms for a total of 11. The emergency department will grow from 62 spaces to 86.
Additional planned upgrades include three new CT scanners, one new MRI and a specialized radiology room.
After the construction of the Yurkovich Family Pavilion, the Ministry of Health will focus on the hospital's south tower and Ilich Pavilion renovations and the construction of a new mechanical services building.
According to the province's fall fiscal update, the hospital construction project and demolition of the old tower will wrap up in 2033.
