A 17-year-old was arrested for allegedly stabbing a security guard and punching a police officer in the face near the Brighouse Canada Line Station.

A 17-year-old was arrested for allegedly assaulting and stabbing a security guard near Richmond Centre on Thursday night.

The youth allegedly assaulted and stabbed the uniformed security guard around 8 p.m. on Dec. 21 next to the Brighouse Canada Line Station, according to witness reports to police.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police and Richmond RCMP received reports of a fight and were called to the scene shortly after 8 p.m.

"A bystander was able to intervene and remove the knife from the suspect until police arrived," said Transit Police spokesperson Const. Amanda Steed.

She told the Richmond News the youth, who is a Richmond resident, then assaulted a police officer during his arrest by kicking and punching the officer in the face.

The knife did not penetrate the victim's protective vest and he "suffered only minor cuts to his hand."

Steed added the victim and the youth did not know each other and police believe the incident was "unprovoked."

Police are recommending the youth be charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of assaulting a police officer.
