A Richmond woman has been sentenced to 18 months of probation for theft of money from a quadriplegic man in a Vancouver long-term care facility.
Vancouver provincial court Judge Michael Munro heard the woman pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000.
The court heard the woman, 22, had gone into the man’s room and took $300 from his jacket pocket and put it in hers.
Munro heard there had been other incidents of money going missing at the George Pearson Centre.
The woman's lawyer, Wes Pryde, told the judge she was 20 at the time of the offence, and was under financial stress.
“Her father told her she needed to pay rent,” Pryde said. “She didn’t handle it well.”
The conditional sentence with 18 months’ probation was a joint submission from Pryde and Crown.
He said the woman lost her job and will have problems finding work in future.
