Over the next five years, Vancouver transit users will no longer have to burn through their phone’s data while travelling across the city.
TransLink announced the recent launch of free Wi-Fi for customers on six RapidBuses, three SkyTrains, and two major transit hubs. The upgrades, made possible through a partnership with Shaw Communications Inc. is the beginning of a system-wide rollout set to be in place in all transit vehicles and stations by 2026.
“We know that free WiFi is something our customers want, and I’m so excited to start delivering this important feature to elevate the customer experience,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn in a media release. “Free Wi-Fi means that our customers can use their transit time for leisure, work, or better connecting with family and friends without spending their money on data fees.”
The rollout will first prioritize RapidBuses, SkyTrains, and 60-foot articulated buses, joining SeaBuses and SeaBus terminals which already have free Wi-Fi installed.
As part of the recent rollout free Wi-Fi is available at both Carvolth Exchange in Langley and Edmonds Station in Burnaby. As the rollout continues, transit users can know which stations have been connected by checking the TransLink WiFi map on TransLink’s website. Or you can simply check if the network name “TransLinkWiFi” appears on your phone when at a station or on a transit vehicle.
