Permits are required to buy, possess, sell or detonate fireworks in Richmond.

As Halloween approaches, the City of Richmond reminds residents it is illegal to buy, sell or set off fireworks in the city without a permit.

This also includes firecrackers.

Under Richmond's Fire Protection and Life Safety bylaw, people can be fined for the following:

  • $1,000 fine for purchasing fireworks
  • $1,000 fine for displaying fireworks for sale
  • $1,000 fine for selling or distributing fireworks
  • $400 fine for setting off fireworks without a permit

According to Gerina Heathe, spokesperson for the City of Richmond, Richmond Fire-Rescue, city bylaws, and Richmond RCMP state that fireworks are "genuinely unsafe."

"City personnel will be actively patrolling the community to watch for illegal fireworks use and other safety issues to ensure the public is safe during upcoming festival times," said Heathe.

"While the City recognizes some people may wish to use fireworks or firecrackers as part of their celebrations, a zero-tolerance approach is in place. Staff and emergency personnel are asking for the community’s support to keep things enjoyable for everyone."

To report fireworks-related complaints, call Richmond RCMP's non-emergency line at 604-278-1212
