Update: NDP secures third provincial seat in Richmond

NDP’s Henry Yao has been elected as the MLA for Richmond South Centre.

The difference in votes was just 179 as of late Saturday evening, with Yao receiving 6,743 (50.7 per cent) while BC Liberal candidate Alexa Loo has received 6,564 votes (49.3 per cent).

Yao told the Richmond News the last few weeks have been a “roller coast ride” and getting the results today took a weight off his shoulders.

He added his job now is to “demonstrate to Richmond South Centre voters they placed their trust in the right person.”

Loo congratulated Yao on his win on Twitter.

 

According to Elections BC, all four Richmond ridings have completed their mail-in ballot counts as of Saturday evening.

The BC Liberals for decades held all ridings in Richmond, but this election, three have been won by the NDP.

The NDP's Kelly Greene won Richmond-Steveston with a total of 10,733 votes (52.1 per cent) against BC Liberal Matt Pitcairn’s 9,398 votes (45.6 per cent).

Independent candidate Vince Li received 483 votes (2.3 per cent).

In Richmond-Queensborough, NDP candidate Aman Singh won 9,406 votes (47.7 per cent) beating incumbent BC Liberal MLA Jas Johal’s 7,728 votes (39.15 per cent).

This was followed by BC Greens’ Earl Einarson with 1,496 votes (7.6 per cent) and Conservative candidate Kay Hale with 1,108 votes (5.6 Per cent).

BC Liberal MLA Teresa Wat held her Richmond North Centre seat with a total of 7,675 votes (51.3 per cent) while BC NDP’s Jaeden Dela Torre received 5,964 votes (39.8 per cent).

Vernon Wang, who was running for the BC Greens, had 1,333 votes (8.9 per cent).
