One person has died after suffering an apparent "medical emergency" Friday morning at the City of Richmond's Minoru Centre for Active Living.

The city's spokesperson, Clay Adams, confirmed the fatality to the Richmond News on Saturday morning.

There were reports on social media that the person had drowned, but Adams said that drowning did not appear to be a factor, noting that the exact cause of death "would have to be confirmed by the Coroner."

He did, however, confirm that the person was in the aquatics area at the time and that "staff responded quickly to attend to them. Richmond Fire Rescue personnel and BC Ambulance arrived soon after to take over."

A spokesperson from the BC Ambulance Service would only confirm that they received a call at 8:57 a.m. on Friday and that "no one was transported to the hospital."

The News reported yesterday how the swimming pool at the centre closed Friday morning due to the medical emergency.

A Richmond News reader called the newsroom to say that the morning swimming session was disrupted after he was asked to leave the pool by the facility staff.

“It was a bit chaotic during that time and everyone in the pool had to get out immediately. I saw ambulances and a fire rescue team flying by while leaving the centre,” said the reader.
