There has been a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases in Richmond – 21 found over the past week compared to 13 the week before – but the numbers haven’t jumped significantly like they have in some pockets of the province.
The B.C. government reported Wednesday that there had been 342 new cases of COVID-19 in the previous 24-hour period, of which 171 were in the Interior while only 57 were in Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), which Richmond is part of.
But Richmond residents seem to be on board with getting at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine – with every area reporting 80 per cent or higher immunization rates.
Second doses, however, are lagging somewhat behind provincial rates in many neighbourhoods.
Across the province, 67.9 per cent of British Columbians are fully vaccinated – only Steveston residents have surpassed this provincial rate with 72 per cent having received two doses of vaccine.
In other areas of Richmond, City Centre and Broadmoor specifically, only 61 per cent of residents aged 12 and older are vaccinated with two doses, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). (Richmond figures are from Aug. 2 while provincial numbers are as of Aug. 5.)
Richmond City Centre and the Cambie/Bridgeport are both at 86 per cent for first doses, and the Gilmore/Shellmont/East/Hamilton area is 85 per cent vaccinated with a first dose.
Provincially, 81.5 per cent have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
