In a wee corner of Steveston Village, the piper played and the staff, volunteers and customers jigged the Highland Reel.
The SOS Children’s Village thrift store on Moncton Street whooped it up in style yesterday with a good old Scottish whirl to celebrate Robbie Burns Day and raise the spirits of locals at the same time.
The store snagged piper Kyle Banta for an hour, who volunteered his services to help attract attention to the fundraising efforts of the charity, which helps foster children across B.C.
Store manager Yasmin Tang said she was thrilled with how the day went and said several residents came by to tap their feet to the likes of Scotland the Brave and Flower of Scotland.
Tang said one resident, “a senior Scottish lady,” noticed the event taking place, jumped on the bus home to grab her book of Burns’ poems and rushed back so a volunteer could read some poetry for her in front of everyone.
Robbie Burns Day is on Jan. 25 – a day set aside in Scotland (and around the world) to mark the birth of the country’s famous poet in 1759.
