What are those orange flag markers above Richmond's Gilbert Road?

Orange markers are used to warn truck drivers and tall equipment users.

The appearance of orange flag markers along Richmond's Gilbert Road has turned some heads, but they are not a new city decoration.

Rather, the markers, on southbound Gilbert Road just past Francis Road, are a safety measure to show there are live overhead hydro wires, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.

Adams said the markers were placed by BC Hydro to prevent trucks or tall equipment from hitting the live wires during the ongoing Metro Vancouver work on the Gilbert Road Sewer Project.

The Gilbert Road sewer line transports the majority of the city's sanitary sewage to the Lulu Island Treatment Plant and is currently working at full capacity.

Metro Vancouver began the project in 2013 by building a second sewer line next to the existing pipe under Gilbert Road.

Once complete, the upgrades will help with future maintenance, increase capacity usage to minimize backups and accommodate future growth in the city.

South and central sections of the sewer project in Richmond began in the fall of 2022 and are expected to be completed in spring 2025.
