Wondering what that smell was in west Richmond?

The Richmond News has discovered that it's most likely emanating from sewage work being carried out by the city

A Richmond resident is perplexed by a strong smell in his neighbourhood

Given that Richmond is on the coast and boasts hundreds of acres of farmland, our residents are used to the odd pong or three.

If it wasn’t the crops getting sprayed on our sprawling fields, it was the odious stink from the now defunct “green” food scrap recycling depot in east Richmond.

But a new scent is wafting its way around Richmond these days, in particular around west Richmond.

A Richmond News reader, who only wanted to be identified as "Garry," contacted the newsroom to report a nauseatingly strong smell of sulphur in the area of No. 1 and Francis roads on Sunday.

He said the stench lasted for an hour or two and he can’t put his finger on where it was coming from.

Since the original story was published Thursday morning, the City of Richmond got in touch with the newsroom to say that the smell is most likely "sanitary main replacement work underway on Barmond Avenue, between Wellmond and Kirkmond roads."

The replacement work - just southwest of No. 1 and Francis roads - said the city spokesperson is scheduled to be completed by tomorrow (Feb. 11) "with minor clean up next week.

"We can reassure the community there is absolutely no public safety issue with the odour."

The News had also reached out to Metro Vancouver – which investigates air quality complaints for the region – to ask if they had received any reports or were able to identify the source. It had not received any complaints.

A spokesperson for Metro Vancouver did, however, urge the public to report such odours to its air quality complaint portal at http://www.metrovancouver.org/services/Permits-regulations-enforcement/air-quality/air-quality-complaints/complaint/
