A driver has been charged after two sports cars — both displaying novice driver decals — collided in the Massey Tunnel last week.

The Italian-made cars, a red Lamborghini Huracán and a blue Ferrari 458 Italia, are believed to be worth around $300,000 each.

According to police, the Lamborghini rear-ended the Ferrari at about midnight on Thursday, as both vehicles travelled south through the tunnel.

Although there were no injuries, the cars were towed away and both vehicles are understood to be write-offs.

Officers from the Deas Island Highway Patrol described the drivers — males in their 20s — as inexperienced.

Although both cars displayed novice driver stickers, police said only one of them was a novice. The other had a Class 5 licence.

And despite not knowing exactly what caused the crash, police said that speed doesn’t appear to have been a factor.

The driver of the Lamborghini is expected to be charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with following too close.

ICBC, which is hiking basic insurance rates next year by 4.9 per cent, announced last month that, beginning in 2017, it will stop insuring luxury cars worth more than $150,000.

There are about 3,000 cars worth more than $150,000 insured in B.C. this year, a 30 per cent increase from three years ago. Many of them can be seen being driven around in Richmond.
