Young drivers suspected of street racing

Three young Richmond drivers have had their licences suspended after a suspected street racing incident on Highway 1.

Three young Richmond drivers have had their licences suspended after a suspected street racing incident on Highway 1.

All drivers were aged 19 and 20, and all were driving expensive cars, including a 2013 Audi S5, a 2013 Land Rover and a 2011 BMW 328i.

Witnesses say the cars were going more than 130 kilometres an hour, passing other vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway, and weaving in and out of traffic near Abbotsford and Chilliwack at about 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Only one of the drivers held a valid B.C. Class 5 licence, while the other two held Chinese licences that are valid while they attend school here.

Sgt. Peter Thiessen, of the Lower Mainland District RCMP, described the drivers' actions as "absolutely irresponsible and

putting the rest of the public at risk on the highway."

As well as eyewitness reports, police saw the vehicles slow down to block traffic on the highway, a tactic commonly used by street racers to create space to race.

Two of the alleged street racers were pulled over by officers, while a third returned to the area and a fourth fled the scene.

"It appears that a particular sector of our driving public still isn't listening ... it appears to be the late teens and 20-somethings who aren't getting the message," said Thiessen.

The drivers were charged with driving without reasonable consideration and are fined $196. Their licences were suspended for 15 days, with possible further suspensions. Police are still trying to locate the fourth driver and vehicle.
