“It’s not just part of the job, it’s who were are as people.”
That’s the sentiment shared by the Sgt. Albert Lam, of the RCMP’s Vancouver Airport Operations, after his officers came to the aid of two travellers at YVR, both in very different, but equally distressing circumstances.
On consecutive days earlier this month, officers at the YVR detachment had the pleasure helping two people in need in vastly contrasting circumstances.
First up was a 76-year old Torontonian in the domestic arrivals section, who appeared disoriented and very confused.

According to police, she had flown from Toronto to Vancouver alone, but apparently did not know how she arrived there or what she was doing there.
Even though she was highly distraught, officers calmly offered her safety, assisted her with medical treatment and, more importantly, let her family know she was safe before eventually helping her return home.
Soccer fan, 14, missed flight
Just after midnight the next day, police responded to the Fairmont Hotel at YVR to help a 14-year old soccer fan, who had travelled from Toronto to Vancouver to watch the CONCACAF Nations League match between Canada and Curacao.
Police said the teenager had made his way back to YVR after the match, but missed his flight home.
Again, officers managed to help the young man, this time making arrangements for a later return flight.
And, with the assistance of YVR personnel, he was able to seek a place to shelter prior to returning home.
“It’s just something we do,” added Sgt. Lam.
