A hockey player native to Richmond was traded on Thursday to the Edmonton Oilers.
The Edmonton hockey team acquired defenceman Troy Stecher in a deal on March 7 that included a seventh-round pick in the 2024 National Hockey League (NHL) draft while saying goodbye to their fourth-round selection in the 2027 draft.
Prior to the trade, the 29-year-old defenceman played for the Arizona Coyotes scoring one goal and getting four assists in 47 games this season.
Stecher also played for the Vancouver Canucks from 2016 to 2020 after which he played for the Detroit Red Wings for two seasons.
He then bounced to the L.A. Kings, the Arizona Coyotes, the Calgary Flames and again to the Coyotes in 2023.
Stecher has more than 487 NHL games under his belt with 19 goals and 89 assists totalling 108 points in his professional hockey league career.
As a Dixon (elementary school) Dragon, he started playing hockey with the Richmond Minor Hockey Association (RMHA) at the age of six.
Come Grade 8, Troy left Richmond to attend South Delta Secondary School’s hockey academy to complement his play at RMHA.
By Grade 11, he was off to Penticton to play in the Junior A BC Hockey League, where he would win the Fred Page Cup in 2012 and be named the league’s best defenceman in 2013.
