Abereena Xu and Chiu Tung (Lucy) Zhou from Richmond's Pacific Wave Synchronized Swim Club (PWS) took home bronze medals last week, at SYNC 2022 in Edmonton.
SYNC 2022 (also known as the Summer Youth Natation Competition) is a summer artistic swimming competition jointly held by Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec Artistic Swimming, which aims to develop athlete talent across the country and maximize opportunities of meaningful competition.
The pair had competed and placed third in the 13 to 15 age category duet. They also excelled in the 13 to 15 solo event, where Zhou placed third and Xu placed fourth.
The pair told the Richmond News that they were honoured to represent B.C. in the competition, and that they were thankful to their coach, Meng Chen, as well as their parents, teammates, PWS, and BC Artistic Swimming.
"Synchro has helped me gain confidence and learn more about myself as I continue to build a stable foundation of self-realization and trust," said Xu.
Xu is happy about her achievements at the competition, and she hopes to continue to make the province proud in the future.
"I look forward to seeing my province prosper as an athletic community."
As for Zhou, she was able to enjoy and feel the music during her performances while envisioning herself as the main character.
"In this competition I did my best performance in this entire season. I am very proud and happy because I have achieved my goals and surpassed myself," she said.
"I am also very excited for next season."
Chen was also ecstatic about the results.
"This competition has been a valuable experience for my athletes and me. It has been both a learning and bonding activity!" she said.
