A Richmond high school's Grade 8 girls basketball team won the city championship title after nearly 30 years.
Cambie Secondary's girl's basketball team finished the regular season by beating McRoberts 43-20 this week.
This is the first time the high school's Grade 8 girls have received the winning title since 1997 and 1977.
“The chemistry on this team is unbelievable," said Chrissy Benz, assistant coach at Cambie.
"Each player has embraced their role, and they strive to get better every day. With fair play rules, it’s critical that every player on the team plays to their potential and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished as a collective.”
Just before their game against McRoberts, the girls won 47-36 over Richmond Christian Secondary School securing an "undefeated record for the year."
Amira Gill and Joanna Wei led the offence for the Cambie Coyotes with defence and rebounds by Carol Li, Ameera Renshi and Aubrey Langelaan.
"This group of girls has shown incredible determination all season long," said TJ Renshi, head coach of the team.
"They never stop hustling and they never let up, even when the pressure is on. Beating a team like RCS in the final game to finish undefeated shows just how hard they’ve worked and how much they believe in each other."
Cambie is now competing in the South Fraser basketball championship as the number-one seed team. This means they have the best overall record during a regular season.
The girls competed in the first game of the tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and lost to Delta 38-39.
Their next game will be against Steveston-London secondary on Thursday at 5 p.m.
The final South Fraser games will be on Feb. 21 at Semiahmoo.
