Richmond is hosting an international fencing tournament this week

The 2024 Vancouver Fencing World Cup, the only World Cup held in North America, is taking place at the Richmond Olympic Oval from Nov. 21 to 24.

More than 400 top-ranked international athletes from 55 countries are coming to B.C. to compete. These visiting athletes will be taking on Canada's premier competitors in epee fencing.

For local fencers, the Vancouver World Cup has been instrumental in developing fencing style, skills and motivation, according to Igor Gantsevich, high-performance director of the Canadian Fencing Federation.

"I can say the World Cup is one of the inspiring factors for our kids because they see these world stars competing,” said Gantsevich

Dynamo Fencing Club, based out of Richmond, North Vancouver, and Gastown, is the host club for the World Cup with event funding from Sport Canada.

Dynamo is the home club of many national team members.

The competition at the Olympic Oval is free for the public to watch.
