Richmond skating stars bring back national bronze

Novice pair Jessie Sun and Victor Lum made it to the podium, while Connaught's 16-year-old star has just bagged a $10,000 COC grant

Two figure skaters out of the Connaught club in Richmond have returned home after grabbing a bronze medal at the Nations Championships in Calgary.

Jessie Sun and Victor Lum won the Novice Bronze Medal in the pairs – the first time in 40 years that British Columbia has produced a pair team onto the national podium.

From their short and long programs, the pair took third place with a score of 71.05.

Wesley, 16, receives $10,000

Also smiling this week at Connaught is its star 16-year-old figure skater Wesley Chiu, who has just been given a $10,000 grant from the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to further his career.

Wesley, who was an alternate for the recent Olympics after finishing third in a national men’s event, was one of 55 recipients across the country, thanks to the COC’s partnership with Petro Canada's Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence program (FACE).

As well as being a rising star on the men’s circuit, Wesley won two medals in 2021 in the ISU Junior Grand Prix Series.
