McMath Wildcats have been seeded No. 7 in the tier two draw of the provincial AA championships
For the first time in recent memory the McRoberts Strikers will have some familiar company when the B.C. Secondary Schools Rugby Championships start Wednesday in Abbotsford.
The Strikers will be making their annual appearance in the showcase tournament and have typically been one of the top “AA” programs in the province.
However, in recent years, there has been a parity gap created with the dominance of such schools as Rockridge, Collingwood, Brentwood and St. Michael’s.
Recognizing the importance of the sport moving forward, the B.C. Secondary Schools Rugby Union will be introducing tiers for the first time at the championships for both the “AA” and “AAA” levels.
The Strikers will be competing in the eight-team “AA” tier two division where they have been seeded fourth.
They will be joined by the McMath Wildcats who have earned the No. 7 seed.
McRoberts opens up play Wednesday morning against No. 5 Southridge, while the Wildcats will take on No. 2 Robert Bateman.
The Strikers won the Lower Mainland top seed with a 19-8 victory over No. 6 Tupper.
The Wildcats secured their B.C. berth with a 24-0 win over Seycove.
The Richmond rivals met once this season with McRoberts producing a 15-3 win back on March 31.
The championships continue Thursday and Saturday.
