Richmond's Camryn Rogers sets new meet record at Harry Jerome Track Classic

The 2023 meet was held at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.

Local hammer-throwing star Camryn Rogers has made a triumphant return to home soil at the 2023 Harry Jerome Track Classic in Langley.

Rogers set a new record with her first throw of 76.12 metres in the women’s hammer throw event on Friday, July 14, beating the old meet record of 75.37 metres.

Coming in second place was Nayoka Clunis with a 71.18 metre throw, followed by Jill Shippee at 70.83 metres.

Also shining bright at the event was fellow Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club member Chanell Botsis, who came eighth with a throw of 60.64 metres.

Rogers told the Richmond News watching Canadian Olympians compete at the Harry Jerome meet as a younger athlete was “so cool and so motivating,” and it was important for her to participate in this year’s event.

Having transitioned into her professional career halfway through the year, the Olympian said the changes haven’t set in yet. She expects things to feel different once she returns from Europe in September.

“I think it’ll be really exciting to go the rest of the season and push, push, push, get to Worlds, and unleash and then come back into the Fall and appreciate what that transition actually feels like,” said Rogers.
