Spending summer with Sidney

Thrill of a lifetime for Richmond's Carter Chow after earning an invite to Pittsburgh Penguins superstar's annual hockey school in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia

It was one very special trip to Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia for Carter Chow.
The Richmond hockey player was one of just three from B.C. accepted into The Sidney Crosby Hockey School — held July 10-14 in the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar’s hometown.
The four-day camp costs $675.00, with all proceeds going to the Sidney Crosby Foundation, and attracts immense interest from across North America.
Over 10,000 boys and girls, between the ages of 9-12, registered this year and only 160 were chosen to participate — with the mandatory half coming from Nova Scotia.
The selection process included Chow having to write an essay on why he wanted to attend.
He explained Nova Scotia is his mom’s home province and his grandparents still live there. They had yet to see him play hockey. This was the third straight year he applied, dating back to the inaugural camp.
Crosby was on the ice with the players for every session, running drills and getting help from Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan McKinnon, another native of Nova Scotia. There were also daily dryland sessions run by the Penguins strength and conditioning coach.
The biggest thrill for Chow was getting to play on the same line as Crosby during a three-on-three scrimmage on the camp’s final day.
