Steveston's boardwalk will be filled with runners for the annual 8K fundraiser run in mid-January.
The Steveston Icebreaker 8K run -- one of the major fundraisers for the Kajaks Track and Field Club -- will take place along the Steveston Village boardwalk and dike trail on Sunday, Jan. 12.
Alongside the run, there will be a contest to see who can raise the most money for the Steveston icebreaker 8K that benefits KidSport Richmond.
All proceeds will go to KidSport, which financially helps kids aged 18 and under whose families can't afford to pay registration fees.
This year, Icebreaker is adding a second kids run due to the race selling out the last couple of years, said Jared Hulme, Icebreaker race director.
There will be the original 1K kids run and a new 2.5K kids run, which will be timed.
Event check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the 1K kids run starting at 8:45 a.m., the 2.5K timed run at 9 a.m. and the Icebreaker 8K at 9:30 a.m.
The race starts on the Imperial Landing boardwalk.
"When people were forced to exercise apart during the worst of COVID, we saw a surge in running, which has now translated to record numbers for most local running events and a boom in the industry," said Hulme.
"It's super exciting to once again host this event in the new year. It's an event that has a great community impact."
Hulme is expecting a third straight sellout year as registration is filling up fast.
"Community, running and healthy living - is what the Icebreaker is all about."
This year, Good Co. Steveston will be the location for pre and post-race festivities starting at 8 a.m. on the day of the event.
In addition to the Icebreaker 8K run, a speaker series is being held with various businesses sharing information on a variety of information on health, fitness and overall well-being.
The first and second talks were put on by Lululemon and Blonyx in November and December, while the third talk will be with True Physio and New Balance on Jan. 8 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. at True Conditioning in Steveston Village.
Registration is required. Click here for details on the speaker series.
Participants are encouraged to register early for the event at www.icebreaker8k.ca and follow them on social media at @Icebreaker8k for the latest news and giveaways.
