The Shakiru Matti Squash Academy turned in a strong showing at the recent Junior Nationals in Ontario, led by Andrea Toth (in purple) capturing the U17 Division.

Players from Richmond’s Shakiru Matti Squash Academy were busy producing impressive results at a couple of high-profile December events.
Andrea Toth lived up to her billing as her division’s top seed by capturing the women’s U17 title at the Canadian Junior Open, held at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario.
Toth capped an impressive run with a four set victory (11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 11-2) victory over American Elisabeth Ross in a showdown of the top two seeds.
Meanwhile, Jacob Lin was second in the U13 Boys competition, while Joseph Toth narrowly missed joining him on the podium, finishing fourth. Sarah Cao also enjoyed a strong tournament, placing fourth in the U15 Girls Division.
The Canadian Junior Nationals featured nearly 300 athletes competing over the four-day event.
A week later, Toth headed south of the border for the U.S. Junior Open in New Haven, CT. She won three straight matches to reach the quarter-finals before losing a close rematch with Ross. The U17 division featured 111 competitors.
The Matti Academy was also represented in the U11 Girls Division by Maria Min and she advanced all the way to the final by winning three straight matches.
