McMath Wildcats are taking another excellent season to this week’s B.C. AAA Field Hockey Championships in North Vancouver.
The Wildcats booked their ticket to the 16-team showcase event with a second place showing at the inaugural South Fraser AAA Championships. It culminated a season of playing against exclusively Surrey and Delta schools in the newly formed zone — reflecting a tremendous commitment for the city’s only high school field hockey program with extensive travel for away games.
McMath went 4-1 in regular season play then defeated Panorama Ridge (4-1) in the semi-finals to secure a provincial berth. The girls fell to a strong team from South Delta in the championship game. It was the Sun Devils that also handed them their lone loss in league play.
First-year coach Sally Koldenhof’s squad features just two Grade 12s and eight players in Grade 10 or younger so the future is bright.
The girls will gain valuable experience this week with pool play games slated against Oak Bay, Kitsilano and Argyle. The tournament wraps up on Friday.
The team includes: Lara Schmidt, Maria Forgeron, Maddie Thacker, Taylor Markel, Nora Wong-Hen, Isabella Schaffer, Hope Chan, Eva Snidanko, Emma Dickson, Sarah Kam, Jamie Arrigo, Mya Snidanko, Chloe Slaboda, Abby Pogor, Ava Koldenhof, Ella Dunn and Jessica Sewell Sinclair.
Rounding out Koldenhof’s staff is assistant Tiegan Docherty and manager Tony Wong-Hen.
