COCHRANE, Alta. — A fire at a gas well north of Calgary that injured five workers earlier this week has been extinguished.

HWN Energy Ltd. says it consulted with industry experts and implemented a well control plan that was reviewed by regulators.

It says by early afternoon Tuesday, the flames were put out and the well was brought under control.

A few hours later, HWN says the well was fully contained with no further releases of liquids or gases.

Alberta Health Services has said paramedics took five workers to hospital after an explosion on Monday — three with life-threatening injuries and two with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither the company nor the health agency have provided an update on their conditions, citing privacy.
