The Editor,
Re: Richmond protest group plans rally outside open house, News, Jan. 28.
Recently, the European Union imposed a carbon tax on all international flights entering and leaving their jurisdiction.
This green tax will raise the price of air travel and dampen growth.
A post-Kyoto international agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate global climate change will have to include aviation.
Also, the new agreement will embrace all major emitters, for the first time, such as China and India.
So the assertion by the Vancouver Airport Authority that they need a new jet fuel facility on the South Arm of the Fraser River with a pipeline to the airport to accommodate business-as-usual air traffic growth in the next 30 years is ludicrous.
In any case, if we continue to ignore climate change, then the Airport Authority will find itself using more and more of the airport improvement fee to raise dykes and add groundwater pumping stations in a losing battle to keep Sea Island from disappearing beneath the rising level of the Strait of Georgia.
