Letter: Love, not loathe, the goats

Freddie the pygmy goat, front, and his buddy, George (with owner Richard Simm) are the stars on their street, making many friends, such as with the neighbours pictured. However, the goats may have to be given up by the Simm family, as farm animals, even ones as domesticated as this pair, are not allowed under the City of Richmond’s animal control bylaw. Open letter to Richard Simms and City of Richmond,

Re: “You’ve goat to be kiddin’?” News, Aug. 5

I am a Richmond resident and I fully endorse what you have been doing.

Families need to go back to nature to appreciate things in life. You and your family have done a marvellous job in letting kids understand that they have alternatives to dogs and cats.

Look at the photo, the goats even have names and they look lovely! I would like to give them a hug, too! Alex, your boy would be devastated if the goats are taken away.

As a resident of Richmond, I say that you have created an environment better than petting zoos.

The animals get love and care from your family plus other families who appreciate what you have.

I am jealous I don’t have the opportunity nor the ability because I don’t know how to care for them.

But your family has dedicated hours to care for these goats like your family. I love you guys for doing just that. Keep it up.

This is the best way to educate the kids to appreciate and love the world!

If you ever need any more food for the goats, just give me a shout.

City of Richmond bylaw enforcement team: Please look at it in the sense that, if the animals are not taken care of properly or if they are wild, they may cause a problem to the community.

For God’s sake, they are goats and are harmless! They have been properly vaccinated and there is a very responsible family looking after them.

Don’t take the goats away please! Let the Simms keep them.
