Letters: Detox, treatment facilities needed in Richmond

A Richmond News reader says city needs more than statistics on overdoses.

Dear Editor,

At the March 11, 2025, Richmond city council Community Safety Committee meeting, council discussed tracking where overdoses occur.

While data collection may provide some insight, it does not address the root issue: the lack of accessible detox and treatment options in our community.

People struggling with addiction need immediate support, not just statistics.

Right now, individuals seeking help often have to leave Richmond to access detox and treatment programs elsewhere.

This creates unnecessary barriers and delays in getting the care they need.

A dedicated detox and treatment facility in Richmond would provide essential support for those in crisis and help build a healthier, more resilient community.

Addressing addiction requires a health care-based approach and collaboration across all levels of government—municipal, provincial and federal.

As Richmond continues to grow, so too does the need for critical health care services.

Strengthening local treatment options will ensure that those seeking recovery have access to the support they need, close to home.

I hope this conversation continues and that meaningful steps are taken to improve local resources.
