Letters: DND fence in Richmond ‘menacing’

A Richmond News reader is unhappy about the construction of a fence around the DND Lands

Canada's Department of National Defence is constructing a fence around its lands in Richmond, just over two years after a large fire ravaged the peat woodland area.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Feds construct fence around DND lands in Richmond,” online, Feb. 27

I’m talking about the mother of all fences, that’s going up around the DND land. A shiny structure, 10 feet high and scaring and menacing looking with barbed wire on top, it definitely will keep the blueberry pickers out.

It started when a wide strip of land was cleared along the north side of Westminster Highway.

In my naivety I thought, what a wonderful idea, the city is creating a greenway for pedestrians and bicyclists to connect the Garden City lands with Nature Park and Shell Road Trail.

How could I be so wrong?

As a Richmondite for 50 years, I’m used to fences sprouting up all over the city. Tall ones, short ones made from all kinds of materials, on medians to keep peace between cars and bicycles. Some don’t last very long, get run over, due to being hardly visible or just disappear.

Coming back to the DND fence, Mother Nature might be kind and incorporate the monstrosity in the inevitable growth of new birch trees.
