Letters: Drug users are people too

Hundreds of people showed at Richmond City Hall to oppose a motion to push for a safe-consumption site in the city.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Safe consumption site debate to continue in Richmond Tuesday night"

I think this is a great idea.

It saves lives, gives people a safe place to use and prevents the spread of infections such as HIV and hepatitis C.

It connects people to resources such as health care and recovery programs should they choose these options. It also prevents used syringes from being left in public spaces.

Drug users have the right to dignity and privacy and safety and this is what we need. There is still too much stigma around drug use and it needs to stop.

Drug users are people, too.

I am personally in recovery and work as a peer at St. Paul's overdose prevention site (OPS) and this service has helped hundreds and is the way of the future.

People need this space with the opiate crisis and I don't think it will negatively impact the community whatsoever.
