Letters: Lights needed on Shell Road trail in south Richmond

Only illumination is from people's home - otherwise pathway is 'pitch black,' says letter writer.

A Richmond News reader would like to see more lights on the Shell Road pathway.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Steveston bike path could be extended to No. 5 Road"

We are willing to spend $17 million on this bike path along Steveston Highway, and more if it is going to be extended. They are going ahead and adding extra lights on top of the lights that are already there.

I have written to the city many times about getting lights down the Shell Road walking path, which is situated between Steveston Highway and Williams Road, but I have had no response.

We probably have more people walking down this path. At night it is extremely pitch black. The only way some of the road is lit up is by people who have their outside lights on, but that doesn’t help as the pathway is still dark and unsafe.

When the walking path was first introduced, and we went to an open house on the design, they showed there would be lights and trees. None of that was put in place.

Is the City of Richmond waiting for someone to be possibly attacked while walking down this dark path? On the other side, which is Shell Road East, they have a little path which was put in after ours and you gave them lights.

Second example: if you head south on Shell Road across Steveston Highway, there are lights down that street and there is maybe only three houses.
