Letters: News reader 'embarrassed' by Conservative wins in Richmond

Letter writer wants Richmond Conservative MLAs to condemn 'extreme views.'

Dear Editor,

Re: "B.C. Votes 2024: Conservatives sweep three Richmond ridings, NDP takes Richmond-Steveston"

I live in Richmond, and to my shame and embarrassment, three of our four MLAs are now from the BC Conservative Party.

While not all the Conservative MLAs hold extreme views, many of them reported by Press Progress have promoted anti-vaccine conspiracies, chemtrail nonsense, denied LGBTQ+ rights and aligned with far-right rhetoric.

Some were even muzzled to avoid controversy during the campaign, shades of Stephen Harper.

Richmond’s new BC Conservative MLAs—Hon Chan (Richmond Centre), Steve Kooner (Richmond-Queensborough), and Teresa Wat (Richmond-Bridgeport)—must immediately and publicly condemn these individuals and their dangerous behaviour.

Failure to do so signals tacit approval and makes them complicit.

Richmond deserves leaders who represent the values of our diverse community, not those who stay silent in the face of extremism.
