Richmond city Coun. Kash Heed calls on fellow councillors to be compassionate toward marginalized people.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Richmond group rallying to oppose 90-unit supportive housing"

The current situation is nothing more than a display of divisive political tactics being employed by certain politicians and those aspiring to be in office.

It is disappointing that they reference controversial issues with inaccurate information and terminology despite efforts to correct the dissemination of misinformation.

A responsible and compassionate council should prioritize listening to and addressing the concerns of marginalized individuals.

It is crucial to educate the community and raise awareness about the challenges faced by those who are disadvantaged, in order to cultivate empathy and understanding among all residents of Richmond.

This includes providing accurate information about inequality and highlighting the positive impact of supporting marginalized populations on the overall well-being of the community.

Moreover, a respectful council should aim to find common ground and develop strategies to prioritize the welfare and dignity of marginalized individuals.

Efforts should be made to establish an inclusive and empathetic environment where every person is valued and supported, irrespective of their background or beliefs.

This is the standard that our council should strive to uphold.

Kash Heed

Richmond City Councillor
