Open letter to Richmond Mayor and Councillors,
Amid growing concerns about X (formerly known as Twitter), with the proliferation of antisemitic and far-right conspiracy theories and amid the growing concern of potential election interference of Elon Musk, I am calling on Richmond's mayor and councillors to discontinue the city's official X account(s).
Other municipalities in B.C., such as North Vancouver and Prince George, have already begun the process of switching to other platforms such as Bluesky, and utilizing other channels, while others such as Vancouver, are contemplating alternatives to X.
According to CBC, the District of North Vancouver's X account, "will have no impact on emergency communication in the district, which also uses Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube to reach the public."
As a parent, an educator and concerned citizen, I am distressed about complacency during an era of an increasing trend towards far-right ideology.
In a community as diverse as Richmond, we need to take a strong stand against intolerance, hatred and bigotry.
It will take many seemingly small acts to resist what is currently happening in our world and it can start with delegitimizing a hate-filled propaganda machine called X.
Please take action swiftly.
