Letters: Public transit riders need fare relief, not another hike

A Richmond News reader shares thoughts on a recent public transit poll.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Half of Richmond News readers think transit fares should go up"

Most people who take public transport have no alternative and are barely getting by.

Is the polling result of increasing fares another example of how most people do not want to pay the full economic or environmental cost of their transport choices?

Why increase the price that contributes less to the environmental damage and decreases traffic caused by single drivers which is what most drivers are?

Peak traffic pricing just like Singapore has done for decades, London has done recently and other cities are the way to go.

75 per cent of all trips in Richmond are by cars.

Do you expect car owners to add more taxes for the use of their cars?

This is the worst survey in recent history.

Do you know that Metro Vancouver has the highest average fares among Canada's largest transit systems?

Do you know of all the bus service cuts in Richmond since 2013?
